I was happy to come across an interesting tidbit of
news: The EPA has honored the Bernheim Arboretum and Research Visitors' Center in Clermont, KY by naming it one of its six Green Building Challenge winners from across the Nation. The EPA called it “an innovative green concept designed to reduce the environmental and energy impacts of buildings.” EPA sources say that the concepts used by Bernheim's design team "may assist the building industry in reducing more than 88 million tons of building-related construction and demolition debris sent to U.S. landfills each year.”
Earlier this year, the folks from our Environmental, Natural Resources and Energy practice group travelled to Kentucky to meet and have our retreat at Bernheim Forest. We hiked around for a few hours and had a leisurely lunch sprawled out on the grass in a quiet corner of the preserve. It was awesome!
Blaine Early, from our Lexington office, actually completed a portion of his hands-on education at Bernheim, and he was able to give us a great in depth tour of the plants and animal species at the facility.
I was personally impressed by Bernheim’s unique way of capturing the essence of nature and transporting it indoors, through the use of LEED building concepts, common sense, and artistic flair. If you get a chance, it would be worth your while to visit.

Pretty tired after our hike...
