EPA Announces Extension for 2010, Next Steps for Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reporting Program

USEPA’s Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Reporting Program was launched in October 2009 and requires the large emission sources and fuel suppliers in various industry sectors to report their GHG emissions data to USEPA. The data is then made available to Congress, stakeholders, and the public in an effort to encourage industry to find cost-effective ways to reduce emissions and ultimately reduce GHG emissions. Over the past two years, USEPA has established a public help center to address technical questions about the program.

Yesterday (March 1, 2011), USEPA announced that it has recently completed extensive work to develop and elaborate on the GHG data reporting requirements for various industries, and plans to launch a user-friendly online electronic reporting platform soon (tentatively this summer). This year’s reporting deadline (originally set for March 31) has been postponed to give USEPA time to launch and test the online system and to allow industry the opportunity to use, test, criticize, and otherwise become familiar with the platform.

We will provide updates on the progress of the reporting system and other news related to the GHG Reporting Program as soon as we learn of them.
