Nashville School Earns Award for Being Among the Greenest in the Nation

Yesterday, the EPA named a Nashville school part of the top 20 K-12 Schools list of the largest green power purchasers among schools. Ensworth School buys at least 300,000 kilowatt-hours of green energy every year, which is the equivalent to the amount of CO2 emissions of forty cars, or, the amount of power necessary to power thirty homes annually.
Although this might seem like small potatoes, in the aggregate, it could really make a difference. Consider that “[t]he Green Power Partnership’s top 20 K-12 schools are buying nearly 113 million kilowatt-hours of green power annually, equivalent to the carbon dioxide emissions that would be produced from the electricity use of more than 11,000 average American homes.”
EPA defines green power as electricity produced from solar, wind, geothermal, biogas, biomass, and low-impact small hydroelectric sources. Ensworth School purchases the power directly from the TVA.
