Water Quality Control Board Votes to Increase Fees on Industry

On September 1, 2009, the Water Quality Control Board conducted a special meeting at which it raised the fees on industry by $1.4 million. Officials for the TDEC Division of Water Pollution Control told the Board that the fee increase was necessary to keep the same level of staffing for permitting and related activities.  Opponents argued that the fee increase was not justified based on workload analysis and current level of effort.

The Board voted 9-1 to approve the fee increase.

The Board required the Division to revisit the fees in 2010 and show how the increased fees have contributed to improvements in service. If service improvements are not shown, the Board may rescind the fee increase. To review rules that were adopted click here.
